The Department Staatsarchiv Sigmaringen founded in 1865 as the Prussian State Archives is today responsible for the governmental district (Regierungsbezirk) Tübingen. The department keeps the records of the regional and local agencies in this district (from 1806 onwards) as well as the valuable records of the central agency of the Land Württemberg-Hohenzollern from the time 1945 to 1952 with the files of the Parliament, State Office (Staatskanzlei), the Ministries, State Law Court (Staatsgerichtshof) and the Law Court of Administration (Verwaltungsgerichtshof).
The records of the sovereign Dukedoms of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (until 1850) and the records of the Prussian governmental district (until 1945) are the centrepieces of the Department Staatsarchiv Sigmaringen housed in a former ducal palace which has been refurbished lavishly and listed as a historic monument. These important records of the State agencies are complemented by deposits reaching back far into the Middle Ages and having an enormous impact on the history of Hohenzollern and Oberschwaben. Such deposits are: the house and seigniory archives of Hohenzollern, the archives of the noble family Thurn und Taxis created in Obermarchtal and the municipal Archives Sigmaringen. Collections of photographs document the everyday history of the 20th century.
