To gain attention in the digital age, it is of crucial importance for archives to present archival material on the internet. Both users and institutions benefit significantly from one central portal offering access to all kinds of archival content from various archives. The German Archives Portal (Archivportal-D) contains archival information provided by German-based archives and is the central access point for users interested in Germany´s archival material.
With the project "Building a German Archives Portal", a basis to enable users to access digital archival records (e. g. information on institutions, index information as well as digitized archival material) via the internet has been established. The project kicked off at the end of 2012 and is for now scheduled to run until May 2016. It offers central and comprehensive access to records of all kinds of German archives, including state and local archives, church archives and business archives. Researchers are able to sift through the finding aids provided by the participating archives, to view search results and, if available, to have a look at digital copies of archival records. Thus, the Archivportal-D significantly facilitates and accelerates comparative research in the inventories of a wide variety of different archives.
The project forms part of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB). In addition to developing and further customizing the data management layer for the Archivportal-D, a presentation layer specifying the different types of archives has been generated. In terms of organisation and technical environment, the Archivportal-D has been embedded inside the DDB. Hence it is able to guarantee a long-term and persistent operation from an archive-specific perspective.
The German Research Foundation has funded the realization of the Archivportal-D since autumn 2012. The project consortium consists of reliable and skilled institutions: the State Archives of Baden-Wuerttemberg who manages and supervises the project, the FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, the the State Archives of North Rhine-Westphalia, the the State Archives of Saxony and the Archives School Marburg – University of applied studies for Archival Science. In 2015, the German National Library joined the project.
Since we developed interfaces to other archival information systems such as the Archives Portal Europe, the German Archives Portal is connected with and integrated into the world of digital archival services.
