Archives and libraries in Baden-Württemberg are the custodians of unique and irretrievable treasures, an immensely rich and irreplaceable heritage of manuscripts, books, official records and other documents, seals, maps and plans. However, many of these objects are now at risk from decay. And it is not only the "tooth of time" that is gnawing them away; acid and wood-pulp in the paper are also causing creeping and inexorable destruction. In 1986, in an attempt to win the race against the disintegration of so much of our cultural heritage, the government of Baden-Württemberg legislated to create a "State Restoration Programme".
The core element in this programme is the Institute for the Preservation of Archival and Library Materials, which now has the latest technology for restoring, preserving and microfilming books and documents that are in danger of being lost.
