The Department Staatsarchiv Wertheim was founded in 1978 to keep the archives that the Land Baden-Württemberg bought from the Princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim. Since 1988 the department has been the centre of the archives association Main-Tauber (Archivverbund Main-Tauber), a cooperation between the Main-Tauber district, the town Wertheim and the Land Baden-Württemberg. In the meantime also the towns Freudenberg and Külsheim and the communities Assamstadt and Werbach work closely together with this cooperation.
