The recently founded Landesarchiv Baden-Wuerttemberg originates from well-established archival institutions. The history of archives, which today have been consolidated in the Landesarchiv, partly dates back to the Middle Ages.
The Landesarchiv Baden-Wuerttemberg has been inaugurated on January 1, 2005 in the course of an administrative structure reform in which the former Landesarchivdirektion (Department of State Archives of Baden-Wuerttemberg) and the subordinated six state archives were merged.
The duties of the Landesarchiv are regulated by the Archive Law of Baden-Wuerttemberg (Landesarchivgesetz) and its organizational structure is governed by an organizational statute (Organisationsstatut). The Landesarchiv is a supreme state authority in the portfolio of the Ministry of Science, Research and Art in Baden-Wuerttemberg (Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg).
The Landesarchiv is domiciled in Stuttgart.
The Landesarchiv is divided into 9 departments and led by a president. The different departments are located in Stuttgart, Ludwigsberg, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Sigmaringen, Wertheim and Neuenstein.
The six archival departments are responsible collecting, preserving, and giving access to archival collections. Three additional collecting-departments are service providers for various national services in the area of governmental archives management.
