At present the archival processing of electronic records is one of the challenges for the Archives. Today nearly all agencies of the Land carry out their tasks as computer-aided work. Moreover, some branches of the agencies are planning an electronic registry of their files. This means that many important files and files to be kept in perpetuity do not exist on paper any longer, but in electronic formats. Therefore the Landesarchiv can only take them over in electronic formats.
It is a very complicated task to preserve these electronic records permanently. Apart from the development of new strategies and methods for accession and permanent archival processing record management plays a decisive role. From the very start when new information systems are developed, a co-operation with those agencies that want to introduce them is necessary, so that an authentic electronic accession can take place later.
At present the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg is one of the few State Archives in Germany which already has practical experience with the accession of born digital data. The archival processing of these data is carried out by the Department State Archives Ludwigsburg acting on behalf of all other departments of the Landesarchiv.
The "digital revolution" means a new challenge for the archivists. Their work has to undergo considerable changes.
