
The Department Staatsarchiv Wertheim holds the records of the Earldom of Wertheim and of the two lines of the House of Löwenstein-Wertheim. The State Archives Wertheim was founded in 1978 to keep the archives which the Land Baden-Württemberg bought from the Princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim.

With the foundation of Wertheim also the records of the town Wertheim were incorporated. In 1988 the Main-Tauber district took the initiative in establishing the so-called "Archivverbund" (a cooperation of the Land Baden-Württemberg, the Main-Tauber district and the town Wertheim). After that date the State Archives Wertheim moved into the hospital of the former monastery Bronnbach, which was completely renovated from 1989 to 1991 and got new stacks built according to the latest archival standards.
